Hypophysis apoplexy is a clinical syndrome characterized by the sudden development of headache, visual disturbance, associated with nausea, vomiting, signs of meningeal irritation and ophthalmoplegia. The symptoms are caused by the hemorrhage of a hypophyseal adenoma. All types of pituitary adenomas can be associated with apoplexy, particularly larger tumors (macroadenomas). The term apoplexy usually describes larger bleeds leading to the sudden onset of symptoms.

Hypophysitis is inflammation of the pituitary gland or pituitary stalk and typically results in varying degrees of pituitary gland failure. There are several types or possible causes of pituitary gland inflammation (also known as hypophysitis).
